My Two Minute Interview

Over the past year or so I’ve been looking for a job in the way that — I imagine — a lot of single parents go about dating. I’m open to the idea but, it’s got to be a pretty good fit for me to give it a shot.

Whether it’s a one-off gig or something more long-term, dating and searching for employment have a lot of similarities. It’s like two accountants looking for love only, in addition to gazing into each other’s eyes over their 1040 forms, one of them is also expecting financial remuneration. Then again what, do I know? I’ve never dated an accountant.

Recently, I had an interview that included all of the nuance and mystery of a two-minute date. A prospective employer gave me a call. We exchanged a few brief pleasantries before he got to his description of the position and then he asked me about my salary requirements — the equivalent in the dating scene of asking someone whether or not they want children.

It was a make-or-break-it moment and, when I gave my reply, I was told that my expectations were a bit too high. The employer thanked me for my time and asked me to call back if I changed my mind before, I assume, calling someone else who might be willing to accept a lower salary that precluded the option of having children.

The entire call lasted all of two minutes if that, and I’d be lying if I wasn’t somewhat impressed by the employer’s brevity — even thankful. It was nice to be evaluated so quickly and then, just as quickly, dismissed. A part of me wished that all interviews could be so efficient.
