It’s All About the Journey

I’ve never cared for the phrase “It’s all about the journey.” Sure I get it. Life is a journey and instead of focusing on the dirt nap we’ll all be taking once it’s over we should enjoy the ride. It’s great advice I suppose but like most bits of advice, it needs to be taken with a grain of salt or, perhaps, a stiff drink or two.

The fact is that if life were really “all about the journey” not much would get done and our world would be a very different place. Highways would take a lot longer to build assuming they’d ever get done in the first place. I imagine the following conversation wouldn’t be too far-fetched.

“Hey Bob.”

“Yeah boss.”

It looks like we’re about two months from getting done with this stretch of road. It’s going to get too cold to lay down the asphalt soon so what’s the holdup?

“Well boss I’ll level with you. The guys and I were really enjoying the demo. Sure we’re not getting much done but the important thing is that we’re enjoying the experience. After all, life is all about the journey right boss?

Surgery would take an odd turn, most likely for the worst.
